The eighth level of BioShock, Hephaestus is named after the Greek god of technology, blacksmiths, craftsmen, artisans, sculptors, metals, metallurgy, fire and volcanoes. As you'd expect, then, this is essentially the core of Rapture. It serves as the main power production facility, gathering heat from geothermic vents on the ocean floor. Located at the base of the city, it was designed by Andrew Ryan, and also happens to be the place of his residence.
The end of the level features a dramatic twist which the game's creator Ken Levine stated was inspired by the movie Fight Club.
